Are You Afraid of Bad Breath?

We often are checking to see if we have bad breath. That is completely normal. Sometimes we even avoid getting together with friends "just in case". Often, we try to mask it by chewing gum or sucking on a mint or other hard candy. You learn pretty quickly this is a temporary solution.  At this point, the most important action you can take is to find out what is the cause of this problem?  Where does it come from?

In all my experience as a practicing hygienist, this is what I have  learned from taking care of my patients. I am assuming you are someone who takes good care of your mouth; this means you brush your teeth properly twice a day, and  you floss your whole mouth once a day.  If you still have a sense that your breath is  not right, you may be someone who has periodontitis. This is an inflammation of your gums.  This causes an infection, or bad breath.  70% of the population over 35 years of age are affected.  Periodontitis means that there are bacteria in the pockets of the gums which cause an infection. With proper treatment, you can get rid of it. Your bad breath will be eliminated.

Monitoring your breath is a good way to listen to your body's well  being and avoiding embarrassing situations in public.  Please do not be shy to ask your hygienist if you are worried you suffer from this problem, She (or he) will be able to tell you if, indeed, you do have gum disease. She will measure the health of your tissue and verify what's going on. It is possible also, that  it is a digestive issue. Either way, both affect dental health and must be treated.  Remember, your hygienist is here to help you!
